It can. A projecting handle may occupy the same space needed by a screen panel, handle, frame or moving layer. The relevant measurement is not only the distance across the opening; the depth between the window, grille and room-facing edge is equally important.

- the gap between the handle and the grille;
- the top, bottom and side edges of the window recess.
